The River and Rowing Museum in Henley is a wonderful place to learn all about rivers, rowing and the history of Henley as well as their wonderfully immersive The Wind in the Willows exhibit. Located on the banks of the Thames, next to the weeping willows and just a short walk from Henley, it’s a beautiful place to spend the day and an easy trip from London. There are lots of activities to keep kids of all ages entertained including interactive exhibits, art and craft projects and trails. Look out for special events during the school holidays too.
The Wind in the Willows at the River & Rowing Museum
Our favourite section is The Wind in the Willows tunnel, telling the adventures of Toad, Ratty, Badge and Mole. There are beautiful 3D models of the story with moving sections and even a yellow caravan to climb into and make pretend cups of tea.
Pick up a free audio guide to listen to the story as you go round. With younger children, I’d recommend reading the Wind in the Willows story before you go to make the most of it.
You really feel like you’re stepping into the story with lots of little miniature displays as well as large ones so there’s plenty for kids to spot and marvel at. It starts out bright and airy on the banks of the river with an impressive Toad Hall. Several houses have been cited as the inspiration including Mapledurham in Oxfordshire.
You soon come to the Wild Woods which are darker, with atmospheric music and a button to press to generate a breeze.
The River Gallery
The river zone has a diverse range of exhibits, from looking at how much water flushing the toilet uses to exploring the construction of bridges to looking at different birds and animals found along the river. It’s really interesting for grown ups too and you get the chance to have a good look around yourself as there are hands on exhibits to keep the kids occupied.
Henley History
Henley has a fascinating history and it’s well worth stopping by this The Henley Gallery too. From the first evidence of human activity in this area, 250,000 years ago through to dressing up in a Victorian costume for the Henley Royal Regatta.
The International Rowing Gallery
In the rowing section, climb aboard a model boat. Have a go on the rowing ergo machine and learn all about the materials used in rowing boats and oars as well as the famous Oxford versus Cambridge boat race.
Other Activities
There is an arts and crafts section upstairs with pictures to colour. You’ll also find a good selection of river-themed books to read. There are trails too designed for different age groups which is a great way to explore the museum. In the school holidays there are special events and exhibitions for children. Facilities
There is plenty of parking at the museum and an excellent cafe on site with outdoor tables for the summer. There are toilets and baby changing facilities. The gift shop is filled with great toys and books including lots of Wind in the Willows themed items.
A trip to the two excellent playgrounds at Mill Meadows (a few minutes walk along the river in the direction of Henley) is highly recommended for a full day out.
