Talk: Mary Anning, Fossil Hunter: Class, Gender and Sea Monsters
17 March, 2021 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
£5West Berkshire Museum presents as part of its Talking History programme this talk by Dr Liz Hide. Described as ‘the greatest fossilist the world ever knew’, 19th century Dorset palaeontologist Mary Anning made an outstandingly important contribution to our understanding of early life in the sea. Yet, as a working class woman, she didn’t fit the accepted mould of a learned scientist and her work was, and still is, not fully acknowledged. Her correspondence with Adam Sedgwick in Cambridge sheds some interesting light on this, and can help us find ways to redress this imbalance.
Dr Liz Hide is Director of the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge, committed to making the museum welcoming, inclusive and accessible for everyone.
Tickets will be on sale until Tuesday 16 March and you will then be emailed with a link to attend.
